Level 3 Media Expression – 3N0792 Media Expression is designed to give a practical introduction to media, with a particular community radio twist. The course gives learners an opportunity to get hands on experience expressing themselves, using radio as their medium. It will also act as a brief introduction to the world of community radio and demonstrate how community radio provides people with the opportunity to use media to tell their own and their community’s story. It is suitable for all learners, and no prior knowledge is necessary. It is particularly suitable for community groups, contributors to community radio programming, transition year groups etc. It would benefit any learner who wants to build confidence in communicating, and anyone wishing to gain a basic understanding of how the media production process works. Course Duration The course involves 31 hours of class contact time ‐ 21 hours of practical instruction and 10 hours with the trainer in a support role, as learners complete the short programme project in studio. This course will be delivered over 10 sessions of approx. 3 hours x 5 weeks or 8 sessions of approx. 4 hours x 8 weeks. Entry Requirements There are no minimum entry criteria for this programme, it is available to all learners and requires no special prior knowledge. Progression Those who enjoy the course and want to learn more may well go on to participate in the Level 4 Community Radio Skills course, during which they will get to grips with the ethos that underlies community radio and further develop their production skills.

Level 4 Community Radio Skills – 4N3305 Community Radio Skills is aimed at new volunteers to community radio, to provide them with a grounding in all areas of station operation. More experienced volunteers may also wish to complete this course to round off their areas of learning and attain formal recognition of their knowledge and expertise. It is also suitable for members of the community, those seeking to improve their research and communication skills, and those with an interest in the role community radio can play in making a difference to their community. Course Duration Total Hours: 35 hours directed learning, of which 21 hours is class contact time with 14 hours of tutor-supported work-based direction and assessment, with the presence of the tutor or their assistants. This course will be delivered over 10 sessions of approx. 3.5 hours x 5 weeks or 8 sessions of approx. 4.5 hours x 8 weeks. Entry Requirements The programme does not require any specialist prior training or knowledge and is open to all learners, however it is likely that learners will have at least a National Vocational Certificate Foundation Level, Junior Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. Progression Those who wish to continue furher training may wish to apply for Level 4 Communication skills or Level 5 Media Analysis. |
Level 4 Communications – 4N0689 Communication Skills for Radio Makers is designed specifically to give community radio production team members the communication and research skills in order to work more effectively together. The course is focussed, fun and practical, and gives team members the opportunity to get to grips with researching ideas, developing programme purpose and content, putting a programme structure together, and spreading the workload amongst the team. Course Duration Total Hours: 30 hours directed learning, with 20 hours of tutor-supported work-based direction and assessment, with the presence of the tutor or their assistants. This course will be delivered over 10 sessions of approx. 3 hours x 5 weeks or 8 sessions of approx. 4 hours x 8 weeks. Entry Requirements The course does not require any specialist prior training or knowledge and is open to all learners, however it is likely that learners will have at least a National Vocational Certificate Foundation Level, Junior Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experience. Progression Those who wish to continue furher training may wish to apply for Level 4 Community Radio Skills Module or Level 5 Media Analysis Module. The course is a great complement to the Level 4 Community Radio Skills Module. This course develops areas of programme production which are not part of the Community Radio Skills course, such as programme teams, research, programme structure etc. |
Level 5 Media Analysis – 5N1298 Media Analysis is aimed at volunteers and staff in community radio, to provide them with a grounding in all areas of Media Literacy which can inform their work of creating community media content. It is also suitable for delivery to members of the wider community, those seeking to understand the impact of media on individuals and communities. It will also prove useful to anyone interested in delivering Media Literacy courses. Course Duration The programme is part time and will be delivered over 8 weeks. The total programme duration is 95 hours. This comprises of 35 hours of directed hours and 60 hours of self directed hours. Entry Requirements The programme does not require any specialist prior training or knowledge and is open to all learners, however it is likely that learners will have at least a National Vocational Certificate Foundation Level, Junior Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. Progression This programme offers learners the opportunity to achieve one or more components towards the NFQ Level 5 Certificate in General Studies
